“Trolley Dances” Program Debuts on UCSD-TV

By Juanita LaHaye

Explore the creative process behind San Diego Dance Theater’s “Trolley Dances” with the new University of California, San Diego Television (UCSD-TV) production of the same name premiering Friday, December 23 at 8:30PM.

Whether you caught the live performance this past September or are getting your first taste, UCSD-TV’s “Trolley Dances” takes viewers behind the scenes of this site-specific dance program through interviews with the project’s founder, Jean Isaacs, and guest choreographers, as well as excerpts from performances along the MTS Green Line.

Produced by UCSD-TV’s Emmy Award winning producer John Menier, the “Trolley Dances” production marks the first time television audiences have been treated to an in-depth look at this acclaimed dance work. The program will re-air Monday, December 26 at 6:30PM.

"Trolley Dances" was started by Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater in 1999 with a distinctly urban concept: Bring dance to the people using a form of city transportation as the vehicle--literally. This year's program - which started in Mission Valley and stretched east to the MTS Green Line's new station at 70th Street in La Mesa - featured choreography by program coordinator Isaacs, Lux Boreal’s Henry Torres, UC Riverside's Wendy Rogers, Rebecca Bryant of Lower Left Performance Collective and up-and-coming choreographer Sadie Weinberg.

UCSD-TV offers programming unlike anything else in San Diego. Launched in 1993, UCSD-TV is a non-profit, non-commercial broadcast station licensed to the Regents of the University of California and provides viewers with locally produced, regionally focused programs that enrich the public’s awareness of new ideas, key issues and local events. UCSD-TV airs on Cox Cable Ch.66; North County Cox Cable Ch.69; Time Warner Cable Ch.18; Adelphia Cable Del Mar Ch. 68; or UHF (no cable) Ch. 35. For more information about UCSD-TV, visit
