Eleven Commencement Ceremonies
at UC San Diego Honor More Than
6,000 Graduates during June Rites

Guest speakers ranging from a global investor and a retired four-star admiral to students selected by their colleagues will be among honorees addressing some 6,300 graduates at 11 commencement ceremonies June 6-7 and June 13-15 at the University of California, San Diego.  More than 65,000 family members and guests are expected to attend.

Graduation ceremonies for the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences June 6 and the UC San Diego School of Medicine June 7 will precede the mid-month June rites. Doctor of Pharmacy degrees will go to 56 Skaggs graduates who will hear UC San Diego alumnus J. Craig Venter, Ph.D., founder, chairman and president of the J.Craig Venter Institute, as guest speaker at the 10 a.m. ceremony. The School of Medicine will graduate 108 physicians at 10 a.m. ceremonies June 7, when attorney John Davies, past chairman and ex-officio member of the UC Board of Regents, will be keynote speaker.

Undergraduate commencements begin at 8 a.m. June 13 when a total 911 Thurgood Marshall College graduates receive their diplomas on RIMAC Field. Michael Schudson, professor of communication and adjunct professor of sociology, will serve as guest speaker. A renowned sociologist, Schudson was acting provost of the college from 2001-2003.

A total 824 graduate students receiving Ph.D. and master’s degrees will gather at 10:30 a.m. June 13 in the RIMAC Arena to hear keynote speaker  and alumnus Ken Kroner, Ph.D., economics, ’88, managing director, Asset Allocation Research for Barclays Global Investors. Kroner runs Barclays global market activities in the U.S. and is responsible for the company’s economic research globally.

Student speaker Nasrin Aboulhosn, graduating with a literature and writing degree, will address some 900 fellow graduates of Muir College at 1 p.m. ceremonies June 13 on RIMAC Field. A Muir student leader, Aboulhosn plans on pursuing creative development preproduction for film or television.

Sixth College will hold its ceremonies at 5 p.m. June 13 when 700 graduates will meet on RIMAC Field to hear commencement speaker Vilayanur Ramanathan, Scripps Institution of Oceanography professor who discovered the greenhouse effect of chlorofluorocarbons and numerous other man-made trace gases and was a pioneer in environmental studies.

The largest undergraduate college class, 1,050 at Warren College, will hold its commencement at 8 a.m. June 14 on RIMAC Field. Student Lorenzo D’Amico, a bioengineering major, will give the keynote address.

Retired four-star admiral William J. Fallon, who served as Commander of the U.S. Central Command from March 2007 to March 2008, will address 110 Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) graduates at 10:30 a.m. June 14 during ceremonies at the Institute of Americas Plaza.

A total 640 Eleanor Roosevelt College graduates will hear Helen M. Pataki, ’96, deliver the keynote address at 1 p.m. June 14 on the RIMAC Field. Pataki, a foreign service officer for the U.S. Agency for International Development who has been posted in West Africa the past two years, was the student commencement speaker at the ERC graduation in 1996.

Revelle College ceremonies at 5 p.m. will close out the June 14th rites, with 840 graduates receiving diplomas. Michael Caldwell, assistant director of the Revelle Humanities Program, will give the commencement address. Caldwell received his Ph.D. in British Literature from the University of Chicago, where he played basketball several times with Barack Obama.

Stan Glasgow, president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics Inc., San Diego, will serve as keynote speaker at ceremonies for 58 graduates receiving their MBAs from  the Rady School of Management June 15. The 10 a.m. ceremony will be held in the Rady School Plaza, and mark the last of the many at UC San Diego for 2009.

Meanwhile, the university’s second annual All Campus Graduation Celebration will be held June 12 with UCSD alumnus Mike Judge as keynote speaker. The “all campus” gathering is the final event of Senior spring—a quarter of activities for graduating seniors.
