UC San Diego Extension
to Resume Classes For 11,000 Enrollees

October 26, 2007

By Henry DeVries

With the wind and fires receding and the air quality steadily improving, UC San Diego has decided to resume operations on Monday, Oct. 29.  UC San Diego Extension, the continuing education arm of the university, will likewise resume operations at all four locations on Monday, Oct. 29 starting at normal work hours.

In general UC San Diego Extension will not reschedule class sessions that were missed the week of October 22-28. Rather, instructors are encouraged to accelerate their remaining lessons as possible to ensure the more than 11,000 Fall Quarter enrollees get the information they missed.  Assignments due during the week of the fires may also be either waived or deadlines rescheduled to accommodate the missed sessions.

The UC San Diego Extension Dean’s office announced that a few specific class sessions may need to be made up because either the course consists of a very few sessions in total, or the missed session included "hands-on" work that cannot be practically made up in the remaining time. The need for make-up sessions will be determined by the UC San Diego Extension department offering the course, upon consultation with the course instructor.

If a student was affected by the fires in such a way that they feel they cannot continue with the course, UC San Diego Extension will be happy to consider withdrawing the student from the class without penalty and re-enroll them in an upcoming offering of the course.

Updates will be posted on the UC San Diego Extension Web site (extension.ucsd.edu) and emails will be sent to students to provide them with needed information.

Any discussion or decisions regarding withdrawals and refunds are being handled by UC San Diego Extension Student Services.  Beginning Monday, Oct. 29 UC San Diego Extension students with questions regarding these matters should email unex-reg@ucsd.edu or call 858-534-3400.
