Mary Hart, Director of Administration and Operations for the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), has been named the recipient of the 2006 Betsy Faught Award, which recognizes excellence and outstanding achievement in the management of general campus academic units. The award honors the memory of Betsy Faught, an exceptional department manager who adeptly and skillfully managed an academic program at UCSD for more than 20 years. The award is granted based on nominations from within the academic units and selection by a group of peers.

Hart's service to the campus began over 30 years ago working in the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. She attained her first business officer position in the department of Chemistry in 1990. In 1994 Hart assumed responsibility as the founding MSO of the Department of Bioengineering, overseeing the planning and design of Powell-Focht Hall and contributing to the development of one of the top-rated Bioengineering programs in the nation. Since joining the Supercomputer Center in 2001, Hart has led SDSC's participation in the design and planning of a new building, helped guide a reorganization of the Center's divisional structure, and established a strong and beneficial relationship with the National Science Foundation, the major funding source for the Center. Hart's "leadership, strategic thinking, wisdom and excellence make her one of the major factors in SDSC's success," said Fran Berman, director of the Supercomputer Center.

In addition to her contributions to the departments in which she has worked, Hart has been an involved and effective university citizen. She has been an active member of the ABA, serving on numerous committees and University task forces. In 2000 Hart was a member of the ABA Executive Committee and co-authored a white paper on staff morale which, along with other similar studies, led to the Staff Retention and Steering Support Committee. Hart has also served the campus on administrative review teams and the Program Review Committee (PRC), and she is currently a member of the search committee for the Vice Chancellor of Research. Hart is known for generously sharing her wealth of experience and knowledge with UC's future leaders, serving as a trainer/facilitator for the system wide Business Officer Institute and as a committee member for the Academic Affairs' Business Officer Academy, a new and an innovative staff development program that provides training, guidance and support to staff members who aspire to become business officers.

"Mary's commitment, high standards, and uncompromising integrity make her an excellent role model..." said Berman. "Her gracious and effective management style, along with her superb leadership skills make Mary especially deserving of the Betsy Faught Award."

Hart will be honored by the ABA at a special recognition ceremony on April 4, 2006.
