As regional top winners in high school robotics competition, members of “The Midnight Mechanics” – the Preuss School robotics team – will be on their way to Atlanta, Ga., April 26 to compete in the National Robotics Championships.

The Preuss School team recently took the prestigious Chairman’s Award among 50 teams entered in Southern California regional competition. The Chairman’s Award represents the spirit of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate.

In Atlanta, the local team will compete April 27-29 with finalists from 33 other regions in the nation.

Additional honors came to the team’s mentor and guiding spirit, Robert Mainieri, Preuss School mathematics teacher, who was named a finalist for the “Woodie Flowers Award,” presented to an outstanding engineer or teacher participating in the robotics competition. Named for its inaugural recipient, the winning awardee “best demonstrates excellence in teaching science, math and creative design and is chosen from among the regional winners.”

The team has received a $5,000 grant from the Annenberg Foundation to pay its entry fee, but needs help for airline fares.
