Get Your Holiday Shopping Done Without Leaving Campus

By Ioana Patringenaru | December 4, 2006

Tired of driving around mall parking lots for half an hour before finding a spot? Can’t face one more rendition of “Jingle Bells” on the P.A. system once you get there? How about doing your holiday shopping on campus this year?

UCSD has plenty of stores where you can find something for everyone on your list. Here are some suggestions for gifts for the family, stocking stuffers and even a few adventures. And just because you’re shopping on campus doesn’t mean you have to give up on getting some great deals! Sales are the name of the game this year.

    Students enjoy free cake, cookies
and apple cider at the UCSD bookstore
while taking advantage of a store-wide sale.
The UCSD Bookstore is running a nine-day sale from Dec. 1 to 9, with different themes for each day. Dec. 4 is spa day, with 30 percent off health and fitness books and 20 percent off holiday bath and body products, among other bargains. We liked the Morning Kickstart Kit, which includes hand cream, lip gloss and exfoliating shower gel ($17.50) but there are many more selections to choose from. Also, don’t miss free food samples on Cookbooks Day, Dec. 5, when the bookstore also will offer 30 percent off cookbooks and 20 percent off holiday foods and candy. Click here for more details about the sale.
  • The Birch Aquarium sale (Photo / Victor Chen)
A visitor shops at the Birch Aquarium's gift shop, which offers a store-wide sale until Dec. 10.
The Birch Aquarium gift shop offers a 20 percent discount on all its goodies from Dec. 1 to Dec. 10. The store has a wide selection of books, toys and clothes for all ages. You can get your little one outfitted with a Pirate Bones T-shirt ($12.95) and pirate socks ($5.95). Or you can buy plush toys, including a seahorse carrying his babies ($9.95), pink dolphins ($9.48) and an orange octopus ($4.98). Get more gift ideas by browsing the gift shop’s Web site at: http://bookstore.ucsd.edu/aquarium/merchant.cgi
  • The UCSD Crafts Center (Photo / Victor Chen)
Those of you who prefer handmade gifts, the UCSD Crafts Center is holding a holiday sale Dec. 4 to 7 on the Revelle Campus near the Grove Caffe. Offerings include unique jewelry, ceramics and glass work. All works are made by crafts center faculty and students. Click here for more information about the sale.
  • Also, check out the first-ever full-blown, homemade craft fair at this year’s Staff Association Pancake Breakfast Dec. 13 in the foyer of the Price Center Ballroom. Judy Schulman, who works at the School of Medicine, will bring baskets she makes out of pine needles collected on campus ($20-$30). Justina Houston, an administrative assistant in Administrative Computing and Technology, will bring homemade soaps, creams and bath salts ($6 - $16). Other crafters will contribute lots of jewelry, paintings, holiday cards, ornaments and much, much more. Everyone is welcome, including those who won’t attend the breakfast held from 6:30 to 9 a.m. that day (which is now sold out).
  • Outback Adventures Rock Climbing
Finally, to find gifts for the more adventurous, head to Outback Adventures. The store sells gear for surfing, hiking and body boarding, including rash guards, wetsuits and thermal underwear. Then you can book an adventure to break in all that brand-new stuff. Outings include kayaking by moonlight in Mission Bay ($28 - $35), an overnight exploration of caves and hot springs in the Anza Borrego Canyons ($89 - $107) and a four-day surf safari in Santo Tomas and Cabo Colonet in Baja California ($197 - $237).
