Associate Vice Chancellor - Academic Planning
and Resources Retires After 40 Years of Service

December 11, 2006

After 40 years of service to UC San Diego, David R. Miller, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and Associate Vice Chancellor - Academic Planning and Resources, has announced his intention to retire effective Dec. 31. Miller will continue to serve in his administrative position on recall status until the conclusion of the current academic year.

As associate vice chancellor, Miller's responsibilities include the planning and coordination of new academic programs and initiatives, policy development, instructional technology, and resource allocations of faculty positions, space, and general campus capital planning and operating budgets. He is also the university administrator charged with overseeing the Preuss School, Media Services, and Academic Computing Services (ACS).

In his four decades at UCSD, David has made immeasurable contributions
to the growth and distinction of our campus, said Marsha Chandler, Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs in a prepared statement. Indeed, he is one of a small number of individuals who have had such an enormously positive impact on UCSD, she said. In addition to his nine years of service as Associate Vice Chancellor, Miller has provided leadership as chair of the department of applied mechanics and engineering sciences (now entitled mechanical and aerospace engineering), acting dean of the School of Engineering, associate dean of the School of Engineering, and Acting Senior Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs. His commitment to students has been unwavering, Chandler said. He has served as a thesis advisor and mentor to numerous graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and was one of the first recipients of the Academic Senate's Distinguished Teaching Award. Miller will return to the classroom as a Professor Emeritus upon his retirement.
