Medical Center Salutes Nursing Excellence at Award Ceremony
Nurse of the year.

Nurses, family members, friends, guests, and health care professionals gathered at UCSD Medical Center for the annual Nursing Excellence Awards ceremony to honor
Dorothy Macavinta as the 2006 David and Alice Miller Nurse of the Year.  Macavinta, a nurse at the UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest, received her award at the annual UCSD Nursing Excellence Award ceremony held May 10 at UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest auditorium.

Macavinta, a 15-year UCSD nurse, helped create the Asian American Nursing Students Support Group at San Diego State University, where she received her bachelor’s of science in nursing.  She also co-founded the Asian American Nurses Association of California.  In her position on 5 IMU, she has been co-chair of the Safety Committee, a Preceptor and educator for new nursing graduates and new employees. Macavinta’s colleagues find her to be a wonderful resource. Patients, families and staff commend her professionalism and exceptional nursing skills.

“Nurses play a vital role in the deliver of quality care,” said Mary Middleton, chief nursing officer.  “The awardees represent thousands of hours of commitment to patients and their families.”

“The patients represent a multitude of ethnic cultures and economic levels and these patients speak languages some of us do not understand, and yet these same nurses devote themselves to meeting the needs of the patients and their loved ones,” said Middleton.  “We honor all nurses, but we would like to highlight 18 unique individuals.”
