Woody Allen to Jazz Up San Diego Holiday Season

By Ioana Patringenaru | November 27, 2006

Woody Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band.

As a director, Woody Allen masterfully uses jazz music to shape the mood of his movies. But Allen also is a veteran clarinet player, who performs every Monday night to sold-out houses at the Café Carlyle in New York City.

Now, ArtPower! at UCSD is bringing Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band to the Copley Symphony Hall on Dec. 19 for a rare appearance outside of the Big Apple. As part of his first North American tour with the band, Allen will give San Diegans a taste of New Orleans Dixieland jazz for an evening of exuberant music.

Woody Allen performs on the clarinet.

By the way, the renowned director posted this summer a list of his 11 favorite jazz tunes on his blog. They are, from number one to number 11: "Blue Horizon" by Sidney Bechet, "Burgundy Street Blues" by George Lewis, "Original Jelly Roll Blues" and “The Pearls” by Jelly Roll Morton, "Coronet Chop Suey" and “Shine,” by Louis Armstrong, "Over the Rainbow" and “A Night in Tunisia” by Bud Powell, "Just You, Just Me" by Thelonious Monk, "Koko" by Charlie Parker and "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane. It’s not clear yet whether the band will play any of these tunes during its San Diego performance.

Seasoned musicians will surround Allen on stage. Eddy Davis, a banjo player who records and tours with Leon Redbone and Tom Waits, is the band’s director. Simon Wettenhall plays the trumpet; Jerry Zigmont, the trombone; Cynthia Sayer, the piano; Conal Fowlkes, the string bass and Rob Garcia drums.
