UCSD Visual Artists Recognized with New Prize for Excellence

By Barry Jagoda | September 25, 2006

Three faculty members in the department of visual arts have been announced as recipients of the San Diego Prize, established just this year in recognition of "excellence in the visual arts."  Winners are Raul Guerrero, Jean Lowe and Ernest Silva.  All three are internationally regarded artists whose work has been widely exhibited in U.S. and international venues.

Selections for the new prize were made by three local non-profit visual arts organizations, including the San Diego Visual Arts Network.  Each artist will receive a cash award of $2500 and have their work exhibited during the year, at a joint show with an “emerging artist,”chosen by the prize winners.

The first exhibition is already underway, running through November 30, at the L Street Gallery, 675 L Street, in downtown San Diego, featuring the work of Guerrero, lecturer in visual arts, and UCSD art student Yvonne Venegas.  Jean Lowe, also a visual arts lecturer, has chosen UCSD art student Iana Quesnell to exhibit with her in a show that will run from December to March.  Ernest Silva, professor of visual arts, also plans to select a UCSD art student to join in his show to be held from March through June, all at the L Street Gallery. The emerging artists will each receive a cash prize of $1000.

A final exhibition, featuring all six artists, will last from June through September.  More information on the exhibitions may be obtained at http://www.lstreetfineart.com/
