Dance Team to Shine on National
Series “Dancing with the Stars” May 11

The UC San Diego Dancesport team will perform live on the national television show “Dancing with the Stars” at 8 p.m. Tuesday on San Diego’s ABC affiliate, KGTV Channel 10. The show will feature a special collegiate “dance off” segment where 10 students from UC San Diego’s team will compete against 10 students from Purdue University. The students will be performing a samba and, if they win, will be asked to perform in the finals airing May 25.

Preuss Teacher Students at The Preuss School sometimes think biology teacher Anne Artz missed out on a career as a stand-up comedian, because of the humor she injects in her classes. But they say they always marvel at her ability to make biology interesting and relevant. Artz’s teaching talent was recently recognized with two national awards, totaling $45,000. More arrow

Form Partnership, ‘Beacon Community’

$15 million grant aimed at improving patient care, safety through information technology
A partnership of San Diego County’s health care providers has been named one of only 15 “Beacon Communities” nationwide. On behalf of the San Diego community, UC San Diego Health System received a $15 million grant aimed at improving patient care, safety and efficiency through information technology. The funds are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and are being disbursed through the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. More arrow

Scripps Researchers Outline
Strategy to Limit Global Warming

Scripps ResearchersMajor greenhouse gas-emitting countries agreed in December climate talks held in Copenhagen that substantial action is required to limit the increase of global average temperature to less than 3.6 degrees F. In a May 3 paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Veerabhadran Ramanathan and Yangyang Xu, climate researchers at UCSD's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, identified three avenues by which those countries can avoid reaching the warming threshold, a point beyond which many scientists believe climate change will present unmanageable negative consequences for society. Two Construction Projects at UC San Diego

Construction Projects The March and April sales of state of California bonds have enabled UC San Diego to restart construction of two major projects: the Engineering Building Unit IV building and the expansion of the Rady School of Management campus. Both projects had been frozen since December 2008 due to the state’s poor cash position.  More arrow
