Beating the 'Summer Slump'
Program teaches low-income kids about healthy eating and exercise
Children tossed peppers. They dribbled lettuces. They took part in a sack race dubbed the tater tot challenge. They were all taking part in a Nutrition Decathlon, designed to teach them about healthy food and exercise. The competition was part of the kickoff event for the Summer Fun Café, a program run in partnership by the San Diego Unififed School District, the City of San Diego, UC San Diego and other agencies. More than 1,700 parents and kids turned out for the celebration, which included a free barbecue, prizes and a vegetable and fruit giveaway. The Summer Fun Café is designed to beat the so-called “Summer Slump” in physical activity and healthy eating that takes place once school is out. More arrow

UC San Diego Receives $37.2 Million
Clinical and Translational Science Award
UC San Diego Health Sciences and its expanding Clinical and Translational Research Institute have received a five-year, $37.2 million Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Center for Research Resources, part of the National Institutes of Health. UC San Diego joins an elite consortium of institutions in a national network dedicated to improving biomedical research by accelerating the application of laboratory discoveries into effective treatments for patients, more actively engaging communities in clinical research, and by training future generations of varied types of clinical and translational researchers. The Ride of a Lifetime
Cycling team comprised of diabetics takes top spot in Race Across America
Cycling team It took UC San Diego graduate student James Stout and seven of his teammates exactly five days, 10 hours and 48 minutes to bike 3,005 miles between Oceanside, Calif. and Annapolis, Md. Their performance earned them the top spot in the Race Across America, a grueling, non-stop competition that traverses much of the country. More arrow

Logo UC San Diego Medical Center—where discoveries are delivered every day—has once again delivered in the category of “top hospitals,” as ranked by U.S. News & World Report’s latest “America’s Best Hospitals” issue. UC San Diego Medical Center is recognized among the nation’s best in five categories: diabetes, geriatrics, orthopedics, psychiatry and pulmonology. More arrow

to ‘Focus on the Future’ with High School Students

Intern Tour AprilTwenty students from Compton High School will participate in a hands-on, three-week summer course at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The program, “Focus on the Future: The Compton — UC San Diego Connection,” is a specially designed set of activities at Scripps for the students presented through UCSD Extension’s Academic Connections Program. Annual Research Funding
at UC San Diego Surges Past Billion-Dollar Mark
Research funding at UC San Diego surpassed $1 billion for the first time in the university’s 50-year history. Total UC San Diego research funding for the fiscal year which ended June 30 is more than $1.04 billion. That number includes $160 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (federal stimulus) funding the university was awarded over the same period. More arrow

Socrates Fellows Program Prepares
Next Generation of Science Leaders and Educators
Last winter, President Obama announced the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Initiative, calling for a series of nationwide programs to educate and inspire students to excel in science and math, especially among underrepresented groups. UC San Diego, has for years offered myriad opportunities to advance STEM education at all levels, including its Socrates Fellows Program — a yearlong endeavor to enhance scientific learning at all levels through mutual learning activities. UC San Diego to Lead New
Malaria Research Center in South America

VinetzTropical disease specialist Dr. Joseph Vinetz of the School of Medicine will lead an ambitious multi-national effort to help control and eventually conquer malaria, establishing a new Peruvian/Brazilian International Center of Excellence in Malaria Research Center with a seven-year, $9.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. Human-Systems InteractionsA research team of neuroscientists, cognitive scientists and engineers at UC San Diego will play a leading role in a five-year, $25-million Army Research Laboratory project to better understand human-systems interactions. More arrow

Diego Senior Class Challenge 2010

Senior ClassFor the UC San Diego Class of 2010, giving back to their alma mater started before the students even received their diplomas. More than 1,200 graduates, nearly one-quarter of the graduating class, made a gift of $20.10 each to support student scholarships at UC San Diego. This year’s Senior Class Challenge event brought in $24,288.40, a 40 percent increase over last year’s record-breaking challenge of $17,224. More arrow
