UC San Diego Announces Steady
Progress in Addressing Diversity Issues

The University of California, San Diego has made steady progress in instituting programs and policies that will enhance campus climate and welcome a diverse community. The Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Academic Diversity and an undergraduate scholarship fund for African American students are among recent efforts that focus on the need for more support for women and minority students.

Win High Marks in National Research Council Study

Doctoral ProgramsResults of the recently released National Research Council (NRC) Data-Based Assessment of Research-Doctorate Programs indicate that three doctoral programs offered at UC San Diego are ranked first in the country, and 60 percent of UC San Diego’s programs are among the top 20 programs in their fields nationwide. A highly regarded “gold standard” rating of doctoral programs and faculty scholarship, the NRC study provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality of more than 5,000 doctoral programs in 62 fields at 212 U.S. research institutions. Scholar Wins 2010 MacArthur 'Genius' Award

Scholar Carol Padden, a scholar of sign languages at UC San Diego, has been named a 2010 MacArthur Fellow by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. She will receive $500,000 in “no strings attached” support over the next five years. More arrow

Chancellor's Challenge 5K Chancellor Marye Anne Fox will lead the 15th annual Chancellor's Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars—a campus tradition to raise critical funding for undergraduate scholarships— on Oct. 22. Undergraduate scholarship funds are essential to ensure that students from all social and economic backgrounds have access to a world-class UC San Diego education. More arrow

Addition of Immunotherapy Boosts Pediatric
Cancer Survival in Children with Neuroblastoma

Administering a new form of immunotherapy to children with neuroblastoma, a nervous system cancer, increased the percentage of those who were alive and free of disease progression after two years, according to researchers at the UCSD School of Medicine and fellow institutions. The percentage rose from 46 percent for children receiving a standard therapy to 66 percent for children receiving immunotherapy plus standard therapy, according to the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Type 1 Diabetes Research at
UC San Diego Gets $5 Million Boosts

Diabetes ResearchDr. Maike Sander, associate professor of pediatrics and cellular & molecular medicine at the School of Medicine has been awarded nearly $5 million by the Beta Cell Biology Consortium to lead an interdisciplinary team in cell therapy research for Type 1 diabetes. Sander will lead a team of domestic and international collaborators, with the aim of generating replacement insulin-producing beta cells from patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells. Chancellor First Pitch Cheering fans filled PETCO Park Sept. 26 as the Padres took on the Cincinnati Reds—but not all of the cheering was for the players. Thousands of alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of UC San Diego shouted for their chancellor as she walked onto the field to deliver the opening pitch and kick off the ballgame. More arrow

Rita Richard AtkinsonThe BBC/Newsweek World Competition 2010 has named UC San Diego alumnus Danny Paz one of its 12 finalists for the international contest to identify “projects or small businesses from around the world that have shown enterprise and innovation at a grassroots-level.” The finalist who receives the most online votes from the public wins the contest, and with it, a better chance for them to have a lasting positive impact on the world.
