February 27, 2018 — Writing in the February 27 online issue of Science Signaling, researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center describe how a signaling protein that normally suppresses tumors can be manipulated (or re-programmed) by growth factors, turning it into a driver of malignant growth and metastasis.

February 27, 2018 — A new computational resource called Recon3D provides a 3D view of genes, proteins and metabolites involved in human metabolism. Researchers used the tool to map disease-related mutations on proteins and also probed how genes and proteins change in response to certain drugs. The work provides a better understanding of disease-causing mutations and could enable researchers to discover new uses for existing drug treatments.

February 27, 2018 — Mitigating climate change and the harms it poses to humanity is one of the biggest challenges facing the international community; however, the University of California (UC) has identified a three-step plan to achieve deep decarbonization that may lay the groundwork for policy-makers around the globe to take action to meet the goals outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement.

February 26, 2018 — Led by researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine, a diverse team of neuroscientists and surgeons successfully grafted human neural progenitor cells into rhesus monkeys with spinal cord injuries. The grafts not only survived, but grew hundreds of thousands of human axons and synapses, resulting in improved forelimb function in the monkeys.

February 26, 2018 — The University of California San Diego Department of Music is well known for its emphasis on experimental music and sound in composition, performance and scholarship, and brings this to the forefront at a special two-day conference March 2-3. “Sonic Fluidities: An Interdisciplinary Graduate Conference” is the first of its kind at UC San Diego, organized by a committee of current Integrative Studies program students. Through presentations, performances and installations, the inaugural conference uses the metaphor of fluidity to explore the social position of sound and music through time and genre.

February 23, 2018 — The University of California San Diego is one of the best schools in the world for scholars who want to solve crucial social challenges and propel world peace, according to Foreign Policy magazine. The publication’s global rankings lauded UC San Diego for its undergraduate international relations program, ranked 11th, and its master’s program for policy careers in international relations, ranked 15th. The campus’s Ph.D. program was named the 7th best in the world for students pursuing an academic career in international relations.

February 22, 2018 — Using artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques, researchers at Shiley Eye Institute at UC San Diego Health and University of California San Diego School of Medicine, with colleagues in China, Germany and Texas, have developed a new computational tool to screen patients with common but blinding retinal diseases, potentially speeding diagnoses and treatment.

February 22, 2018 — San Diego and four other cities were named 2018 Great American Defense Communities for promoting innovative programs, community outreach, and best practices in support of the military and UC San Diego's Veteran Ventures program was one of the exceptional innovative programs honored along with the city during an award ceremony aboard the USS Midway.

February 22, 2018 — Researchers at the University of California San Diego Center for Microbiome Innovation have identified the mechanism by which a clinically relevant bacterium may gain antibiotic resistance, and have come up with a model for predicting the conditions under which it spreads. The findings, which establish a framework for understanding, quantifying and hopefully combating the emergence of superbugs, were published in a recent paper in eLife.

February 22, 2018 — Imagine an alley. If what you're picturing is a drab and narrow passageway, lined with garbage bins and cars, maybe pocked with puddles and potholes, you're not alone. Alleys are some of our city's most neglected public spaces-but they don't have to be. Students from UC San Diego's Urban Studies and Planning Program, led by faculty member Sue Peerson, are working hard to transform our attitudes about alleys. Alleys, they say, can help make our urban environments greener, friendlier and more connected.
