December 20, 2017 — University of California San Diego researchers in the Department of Physics have shed light on the formation of supermassive black holes and galaxies. The research by Professor Shelley Wright, graduate student Andrey Vayner and their colleagues outlines the physics surrounding the formation of black holes and galaxies, improving scientific understanding of how the two grow in unison. Their findings, published in the December 2017 issue of Astrophysical Journal directly impact theoretical work on supermassive black holes’ and galaxies’ formation and evolution through cosmic time. Their work also provides important new clues on how black holes impact the star formation history of galaxies.

December 19, 2017 — The combined effects of pesticides and a lack of nutrition form a deadly one-two punch for animals, new research shows for the first time. Researchers studied how honey bees fared with exposure to pesticides and limited nutrient sources, scenarios found in agricultural areas. They were surprised to find that bee deaths increased by up to 50 percent more than they expected.

December 15, 2017 — Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego have made a discovery with potential human health impact based on a study of parchment tubeworm, the marine invertebrate Chaetopterus sp., that resides in muddy coastal seafloors. A new study published Dec. 12 in Biochemical Journal finds that the tubeworm, also known for its bioluminescence, has a ferritin with the fastest catalytic performance ever described, nearly eight times faster than that of human capabilities.
