Structural engineering students got an opportunity to test their skills at creating unmanned aerial vehicle wings out of composite materials as part of a new structural engineering senior design class at UC San Diego. The class, called SE143, includes all three stages of the industrial aircraft wing production cycle—designing, building and testing.

NASA has selected Alan Hargens, a professor of orthopedic surgery at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, to receive a 2017 Distinguished Public Service Medal for his research on astronaut health and performance. This is NASA's highest form of recognition for any non-government employee whose distinguished service, ability or vision has personally contributed to NASA's advancement of U.S. interests.

The West Antarctic Ice Sheet, a landbound mass of ice larger than Mexico, experienced substantial surface melt through the austral summer of 2015-2016 during one of the largest El Niño events of the past 50 years. The finding is of interest, because El Niño events are expected to become more common if planetary warming trends continue.

Over 30 computer science students split into five teams to develop multiplayer videogames in the 10 weeks of the spring quarter, and their final presentations on June 9 drew a large SRO crowd of other students and gamers to the Qualcomm Institute auditorium.

2017 is shaping up to be another banner year for hiring faculty in one of the fastest-growing departments on the campus of the University of California San Diego. Professor Dean Tullsen, Chair of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department, announced the first two hires of the faculty recruiting year. Effective July 1, Nadia Polikarpova and Sicun Gao will become assistant professors in the department.

The United States is home to more than half a million electric vehicles. What if those vehicles could be turned into virtual power plants, feeding energy back into the grid while connected to a charger? Thanks to a $7.9 million grant from the California Energy Commission, San Diego-based Nuvve Corporation will demonstrate how this technology could work on a large-scale with help from UC San Diego.

The University of California San Diego and 13 institutions in Baja California announced the launch of the CaliBaja Education Consortium at the Cross-border Innovation Summit that took place on June 9, 2017 on the UC San Diego campus. The new entity will serve the entire CaliBaja region and will allow researchers and students to work together across borders. Leaders of 10 institutions signed memoranda that brought the consortium to life during the event.

Last October, leadership at the University of California, San Diego—thrilled that His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama had accepted the campus’ invitation to be the keynote speaker at the 2017 commencement—were told by the Friends of the Dalai Lama Foundation that “all of this is bigger than anyone can imagine.” This is big: the Dalai Lama is one of the most recognized and respected individuals in the world.
