Featured events include a look inside new ventures during a “startup crawl” and 3 pitch competitions. The free conference is open to community, students and entrepreneurs from Baja-Cali region.

In a new paper published this week in PNAS, researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center, in collaboration with colleagues at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, the University of Colorado School of Medicine and SignalRx, a San Diego-based biopharmaceutical company, describe a potential new class of anti-cancer drugs that inhibit two or more molecular targets at once, maximizing therapeutic efficiency and safety.

Training Better Scientists Half a World Away

Wael Al-Delaimy grew up in Iraq, where he trained to become a medical doctor and epidemiologist. He worked in Jordan, studied in New Zealand and at Harvard University, joined the International Agency for Research in Cancer (part of the World Health Organization) and eventually arrived in 2003 at UC San Diego, where he is now professor and chief of the Division of Global Health in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine in the School of Medicine.

Gospel Choirs to Spread Joy at Lytle Scholarship Concert Jan. 29

Clapping is optional, but it may be difficult to resist. That’s what gospel music is intended to do—get you swaying, tapping your feet and joining in the joyful harmony. On Sunday, Jan. 29, UC San Diego will host the 21st annual Lytle Scholarship Concert, featuring the UC San Diego Gospel Choir with special guests Archie Robinson and New Birth Praise. All proceeds from the event, titled “Yet Still I Rise,” will support undergraduate scholarships.

To improve the well-being of both patients and family during this vulnerable time, a set of new guidelines has been released, providing physicians with evidence-based strategies to optimize outcomes for the critically ill and those at their bedside.
