Peter and Rosemary Grant of Princeton University will discuss discoveries related to Galapagos finches—birds made famous by Charles Darwin—at the 2016 Rosenblatt Lectureship in Evolutionary Biology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego. The free lecture is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Nov. 21, 2016, at the Robert Paine Scripps Forum for Science, Society and the Environment (Scripps Seaside Forum), 8610 Kennel Way in La Jolla, Calif.

UC San Diego’s Division of Arts and Humanities is devoted to developing students’ skills of critical thinking and analytic expression. Those skills include writing analytically. Some students, however, who enroll at the university—including some first-generation, underrepresented and international students—have not yet met the University of California’s entry-level writing requirement. So, the division gives them a boost toward graduation success with its Basic Writing Program.

Born and raised in Shelton, a small town in Washington State, Keyzers-Flanagan joined the Marines at age 18 so she could travel the world. Soon after, she became a Marine security guard, protecting U.S. Embassies around the globe. The senior attended college on a part-time basis until she enrolled in UC San Diego two years ago. An international studies-sociology major, Keyzers-Flanagan is also earning a minor in international migration studies. She plans to work for the U.S. State Department after graduation.

Frank Montoya had been working at UC San Diego for eight years when 9/11 happened, a terrorist attack that shook the world, the nation and the campus community. For Montoya, the event would be especially life-altering because the Navy Reservist was recalled to active duty and mobilized to support military operations in the Middle East, leaving behind his family and job at the university.

With just one bicycle enforcement officer on the UC San Diego Police Department, gathering up the abandoned bikes can present a challenge. This summer, however, the department tried something different. At the suggestion of Sergeant Manuel “Nel” Garcia, who oversees the department’s Community Service Officer Program, CSOs began assisting with bike abatement. The team of student officers fanned out across campus dutifully tagging bikes with warnings, then helping to remove abandoned bikes.
