Breakfast with Champions to Benefit Prostate Cancer Research Feb. 22

The University of California, San Diego will host its first-ever fundraiser for prostate cancer research, “Breakfast with Champions,” on Friday, Feb. 22 at the La Jolla Country Club. The event will feature Pro Football Hall of Famers and prostate cancer survivors Mike Haynes and Deacon Jones who will discuss their experiences as champions, both on and off the field. The public is invited; all proceeds from the event will benefit prostate cancer research at the UC San Diego School of Medicine.

UC San Diego to Host Medical Education for Diverse Students Conference Jan. 26

The University of California, San Diego is hosting its first-ever conference designed specifically for undergraduate students interested in medical or pharmacy school. Titled “Medical Education for Diverse Students,” or MEDS, the all-day conference will include keynote speakers and workshops on various components of the application process, as well as behind-the-scenes, hands-on experiences at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Black History Month to Celebrate Anniversaries of Emancipation Proclamation and March on Washington

This year marks two momentous anniversaries in U.S. history. 150 years ago, in 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation that released enslaved Africans from bondage. A century later, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, which helped shape civil and economic rights for African Americans and all U.S. citizens. The significance of these two benchmarks of U.S. history will be recognized during the University of California, San Diego’s celebration of Black History Month.

Annual Heart of San Diego Gala Honors Audrey Geisel Feb. 9

The University of California, San Diego’s 16th annual Heart of San Diego Gala will honor local philanthropist and community leader Audrey Geisel Feb. 9 at the Grand Hyatt Aviara Resort. The formal fete will include dinner, dancing and a silent auction. Former San Diego Charger Rolf Benirschke will serve as the evening’s emcee. All proceeds from the event will benefit the UC San Diego Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center.

Record-Breaking Winter Game Fest Poised to Attract Thousands of Video Gamers

One of the biggest video game tournaments on the West Coast, the University of California, San Diego’s Winter Game Fest, is expected to have more games, attendees and prizes this year than ever before. The eight annual festival will take place from 1 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 18 and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Jan. 19-20 in the Price Center Ballrooms East and West. The event is free and open to the public.
