Students for a Democratic Society Founder Tom Hayden to Speak on Activism at UC San Diego
Tom Hayden – activist, founder of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and former Calif. state Senator and Assemblyman – will deliver a talk titled “Student Movements: Then and Now” at 6 p.m., Nov. 5 at the Robinson Auditorium on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Chicano/a~Latino/a Arts and Humanities (CLAH) minor, Thurgood Marshall College, the Department of Political Science and the Department of literature.

Three legendary San Diego venture capitalists will discuss past lessons learned and thoughts about the future of local commercial biotech ventures during the first in a series of planned “conversations” Nov. 7 in Calit2’s Atkinson Hall at UC San Diego. The event is being billed as the first of its kind in San Diego.
Ghostly Geisel to Kick Off New 24/5 Study Space with Midnight Celebration Oct. 28
At the stroke of midnight, especially during the week of Halloween, frightening things are likely to happen. But this Sunday at midnight, something frightfully good is on the agenda for UC San Diego students: the UC San Diego Library will open a long-anticipated 24/5 Study Commons in Geisel Library that will remain open throughout the academic year.

Olympian, Athletics and Campus Community Show UC Pride at Onward California
Olympian athlete Sonali Merrill joined King Triton, the men’s water polo team, women’s volleyball team and the campus community for Onward California Monday in Town Square. Merrill signed autographs and posed for photos as attendees added their names to the “I Believe in UC” art wall and enjoyed free gelato.
Alumnus, Nobel Laureate Bruce Beutler to Speak at UC San Diego Nov. 8
University of California, San Diego alumnus Bruce Beutler, M.D., will return to his alma mater Nov. 8 to speak about his experiences as a 2011 Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine.
Celebrated Chef and Cookbook Author Anne Willan to Speak Oct. 23
Anne Willan, the celebrated chef and cookbook author, will give a talk on “The Cookbook Family Tree: The History of Early Cookbooks,” at the UC San Diego Faculty Club on October 23 at 5 p.m. Her talk will include a reception and book signing of The Cookbook Library: Four Centuries of the Cooks, Writers, and Recipes That Made the Modern Cookbook.
U.S. and Korean Ambassadors to Discuss Conflicts in Northeast Asia at UC San Diego
Important changes are taking place on the Korean peninsula, including elections in the South and the succession and possible reforms in the North. Yet, progress on the denuclearization of the peninsula through multinational talks remains blocked. The U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea (South Korea), Sung Kim, and the Republic of Korea’s Ambassador to the U.S., Young-jin Choi, will reflect on these recent developments and the current state of the U.S.–Korea alliance during a public forum “The Future of the Korean Peninsula and the U.S.-Republic of Korea Alliance.”

Now, as part of the 2012 Founders’ Celebration Nov. 15 to 16, we will celebrate history in the making: The investiture of UC San Diego’s eighth chancellor, Pradeep K. Khosla.
