Sheldon Engelhorn Named UC San Diego’s Alumni Regent

Sheldon C. Engelhorn will serve on the University of California Board of Regents effective July 1, 2013. A selection committee consisting of leadership from UCSD Alumni Board of Directors and the UC San Diego Foundation Board chose Engelhorn, a San Diego-based entrepreneur, university leader and philanthropist.

Campus Invited to Participate in Strategic Planning Process

The campus-wide strategic planning process is officially underway and all campus members are invited to participate throughout the academic year. The first two town hall meetings will take place on Dec. 6 and Dec. 10, and are geared toward faculty and staff because students are getting ready for finals’ week. Student-focused town halls will be scheduled for early next year.

Student-Led TEDxUCSD will highlight UC San Diego’s “Innovation and Tradition”

TEDxUCSD is debuting at UC San Diego in May 2013. Created in the spirit of TED’s mission of “Ideas Worth Spreading,” TEDxUCSD is a student-run initiative bringing together leading thinkers and doers to share ideas that matter in and to any discipline. Through a local forum, TEDxUCSD hopes to spark deep discussion and connection to inspire people to change their lives, their futures and ultimately their world.

Ten UC San Diego Faculty Named 2012 AAAS Fellows

Ten professors at the University of California, San Diego have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the nation’s largest scientific organization. They are among 702 members selected this year by colleagues in their disciplines to be honored by the association for “scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.”

Study Sheds Light on How Pancreatic Cancer Begins

Research led by scientists at the University of California, San Diego and UC San Francisco Schools of Medicine examined the tumor-initiating events leading to pancreatic cancer (also called pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma or PDA) in mice. Their work, published on line November 29 in the journal Cancer Cell, may help in the search for earlier detection methods and treatments.

Four Common Antipsychotic Drugs Found to Lack Safety and Effectiveness in Older Adults

In older adults, antipsychotic drugs are commonly prescribed off-label for a number of disorders outside of their Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved indications – schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In a new study, four of the antipsychotics most commonly prescribed off label for use in patients over 40 were found to lack both safety and effectiveness.

UC San Diego Joins National #GivingTuesday to Open the Holiday Giving Season

First there was Black Friday. Then came Cyber Monday. Now, #GivingTuesday is making its debut. UC San Diego is joining nonprofits and corporate partners across the nation to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. Taking place on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving—Nov. 27 this year--#GivingTuesday encourages charitable activities and celebrates the spirit of philanthropy.

Innovative Researchers Share Ground-breaking Research with Packed House at Founders’ Symposium

It’s not often you can go to an event and be asked to leave your cell phone on to share thoughts via social media. At the Founders’ Symposium held Friday, however, that was exactly the case. Event moderator and UC San Diego alumna Lauren Reynolds ’94 encouraged the audience to interact on Twitter (#UCSDFounders) during the event.
