UC San Diego Appoints Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Following a comprehensive nationwide search, today the University of California Regents approved the appointment of Linda S. Greene as UC San Diego’s first Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (VC-EDI). She will report to Suresh Subramani, Executive Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs, with an indirect reporting relationship to Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla.

UC San Diego’s Tsien Honored with First-Ever “Golden Goose Award”

Roger Tsien, PhD, professor of pharmacology, chemistry and biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine who shared the 2008 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his role in helping develop and expand the use of green fluorescent proteins (GFP) was honored today with one of the first-ever “Golden Goose Awards.”

Neural Stem Cells Regenerate Axons in Severe Spinal Cord Injury

In a study at the University of California, San Diego and VA San Diego Healthcare, researchers were able to regenerate “an astonishing degree” of axonal growth at the site of severe spinal cord injury in rats.  Their research revealed that early stage neurons have the ability to survive and extend axons to form new, functional neuronal relays across an injury site in the adult central nervous system (CNS).
