Expertise/Areas of Interest:
Zoltan Hajnal is a scholar of racial and ethnic politics, urban politics, direct democracy, and political behavior. His research interests include minority representation, urban governance, inequality, and political participation. He is currently working on a project that focuses on the multiple dimensions of Independent party choice and a book manuscript that examines the impact of black mayoral leadership on white racial attitudes and voting behavior.

Hajnal is the author of numerous articles on minority representation, racial segregation, interest group politics, and neighborhood poverty. His published works have appeared in journals such as The American Political Science Review, The Journal of Politics, Urban Affairs Review, and Social Science Quarterly.
Background:
Hajnal joined the UCSD political science department in 2001. Previously, he worked as a research fellow at the Public Policy Institute of California. He recently received the American Political Science Association award for Best Paper on Urban Politics. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago and a B.S. degree from Yale University in political science and geophysics (cum laude).
