Lawrence S.B. Goldstein
Expertise/Areas of Interest
Dr. Goldstein is a nationally recognized researcher who studies the mechanisms of function of neurons in the brain and how this relates to diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s and ALS. His lab provided the first molecular descriptions of kinesin’s structure and organization, and has recently discovered important links between transport processes and diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s. Dr. Goldstein has also had an active role in National Science policy, especially regarding stem cell research. He has served on many public science advisory committees (including the Stem Cell Research Advisory Panel of the California Senate Rules Committee), and he has written about, spoken about, and been interviewed by the news media on numerous occasions about science issues, most notably stem cell research. He has also testified on a number of occasions in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate about NIH funding and stem cell research.
Background
As a cofounder and consultant of the biotechnology company Cytokinetics, Dr. Goldstein has had an active role in private industry.
