Xu is an expert on DNA repair in mammalian cells and can discuss the biochemical pathways involved in DNA repair in embryonic stem cells. His research focuses on the functions of proteins that are involved in the repair of damaged DNA. Because unrepaired DNA damage eventually leads to the transformation of these cells into cancer cells, these proteins are dubbed tumor suppressors. One critical tumor suppressor is p53. Xu and his colleagues have shown that p53 plays an important role in getting rid of DNA damaged embryonic stem cells from the pool of embryonic stems cells that are used to generate new cells. This ensures the integrity of the genetic material in embryonic stem cells. His laboratory is investigating other pathways involved in DNA repair in embryonic stem cells as well as their interaction with pathways that allow the unlimited division of embryonic stem cells.
