Ghostly Geisel to Kick Off New 24/5 Study Space with Midnight Celebration Oct. 28

At the stroke of midnight, especially during the week of Halloween, frightening things are likely to happen. But this Sunday at midnight, something frightfully good is on the agenda for UC San Diego students: the UC San Diego Library will open a long-anticipated 24/5 Study Commons in Geisel Library that will remain open throughout the academic year.

“We realize midnight is sort of late for a celebration but this is a very special occasion for the Library and for our students,” said Brian E. C. Schottlaender, The Audrey Geisel University Librarian at UC San Diego, “so we hope that our students will join us to mark this historic event.  The students have long wanted this ‘round the clock study space and we are so glad we can now provide it to them. This expands hours available for study in the Geisel Library by nearly 40 percent.”

An especially ghoulish opening event will be held at midnight Sunday, Oct. 28 to kick off the 24/5 Geisel Study Commons and Halloween Week. The event, which will be presided over by the university librarian, will be celebrated with spooky music, a silent horror film, and a variety of Halloween snacks and sweets, as well as study necessities such as blue books, energy drinks, coffee, and other items.  All students are encouraged to come join the fun and then stay and study into the wee hours.

The 24/5 Study Commons, which will provide more than 500 seats on the main floor of Geisel Library’s East Wing (currently known as the second floor of the Science & Engineering Library), will be open to current UC students, faculty, and staff only. Valid UCSD ID cards will be required during overnight hours. Amenities will include: large and small study tables, individual study carrels, electrical outlets, comfortable chairs, group study rooms, and computer workstations. The Study Commons is being funded in part by a recent gift from the Alice G. Marquis Living Trust.

Study Commons hours during fall, winter, and spring academic quarters will be:

Sunday - 10 a.m. to Midnight

Monday - Thursday - 24 Hours

Friday - Midnight to 6 p.m.

Saturday - 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
