ArtPower! Co-commissions New Work by Calder Quartet

UC San Diego’s ArtPower! teamed up with the Carlsbad Music Festival  Jan. 27 at The Loft to co-commission bad black bottom kind, a new work performed by the Calder Quartet.

Through extensive partnerships, ArtPower! at UC San Diego provides multidisciplinary art programs for students and the San Diego community.

Inspired by contemporary works from indie rock artists such as Oneida and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, bad black bottom kind, was composed by Jacob Cooper. “These works pound through hundreds of repetitions of the same lines, yet manages to hold—or even build—the tension throughout,” Cooper said.  The dynamic talents of the Calder Quartet have been exemplified in every genre of music they’ve performed, whether it’s Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, or sold-out rock shows with bands like Vampire Weekend or The Airborne Toxic Event.

ArtPower! was able to co-commission this new work of art in part through private donations to the ArtPower! to the People Fund. Additional underwriting support for the Calder Quartet's performance of bad black bottom kind was provided by donor, Oscar Gerardo. In order to continue and grow the program in the 2012-2013 ArtPower! season and support new works of art , additional funding is needed.
