Brain-Controlled Cell Phone Dials With Your Mind
The Huffington Post, April 12 -- The bar for hands free technology has officially been raised. Researchers in California have created a cell phone that dials numbers by responding to brain-initiated cues. Developer Tzyy-Ping Jung, a scientist at the Swartz Center for Computational Neuroscience at UC San Diego, and his colleagues believe that with a little training, anyone can reach 100 percent accuracy on the system. Poll: Budget Deal Wins Support, But Americans Wary
USA Today, April 13 --  Americans overwhelmingly approve of the last-minute budget deal that averted a partial government shutdown, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, but the public is wary and divided about the tough steps that may follow as officials try to curb spiraling deficits. Iran Book News Agency, April 13 -- "Master Harold...and the Boys" a play by Athol Fugard has been rendered into Persian by Davoud Zinlou and will be released soon. The book will be presented at the 24th Tehran International Book Fair. Fugard is on the UC San Diego faculty. More

Statewide List of Distinguished Schools Includes 10 From SD
KPBS, April 12 -- The state Department of Education designated 10 San Diego County middle and high schools as "distinguished schools" today, including the Preuss School at UC San Diego. "These schools are being recognized for attaining high levels of performance and sustained growth, and for making significant progress in closing the academic achievement gap," said Tom Torlakson, the state's head of public instruction. Fixes at UCSD ERs Delay Cardio Center Opening
San Diego Union-Tribune, April 12 -- The scheduled April 4 opening of the $227 million UC San Diego Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center continues to be delayed. Before state officials can inspect the cardiovascular center and allow it to open, the university must make corrections in the emergency departments at UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest and at UCSD Thornton Hospital in La Jolla, a UCSD spokeswoman said Tuesday. More

San Diego Union-Tribune, April 12 -- Eating pesto can leave you with more than just garlic breath. Pine nuts, usually one of the key ingredients in pesto, have been linked to an increasingly common taste disorder called pine mouth. The syndrome, which usually begins within a day of eating pine nuts, consists of a bitter, metallic taste in the mouth that can last up to two weeks.
