Two Teams Prepare for Epic Ocean Battle: a Race to the Bottom
FOX News, April 26 -- Are there sea monsters 36,000 feet below the ocean's surface? Or just strange, marine invertebrates where sunlight never penetrates? Triton Submarines’ Bruce Jones and Patrick Lahey and Virgin Oceanic’s Chris Welsh and Sir Richard Branson all intend to find out. Virgin Oceanic is partnering with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Google Earth to map the currently unexplored, submersed tundra using what you could describe as a small plane, with wings, and a one-person compartment with a range of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) once on bottom. Parent-only Classes Can Curb Childhood Obesity
San Diego Union-Tribune, April 26 -- A lot of research and effort is being expended to better understand how to treat and reduce obesity in children. Last year, a small, published study by Kerri Boutelle, an associate professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at UC San Diego reported that childhood obesity treatments that directly involved only parents appeared to be just as effective as plans that involved both parents and children. Boutelle is beginning a larger, longer study (called FRESH) that will provide no-cost treatment and follow 150 San Diego families for three years. Some families will participate in parent-only weight reduction plans, others in treatments requiring active participation by parent and child. More
