Autism Screening: Simple Checklist Could
Help Detect Autism Spectrum Disorders in 1-Year-Old Children

ABC News, April 28 -- Current screening methods can signal autism in toddlers 18 months and older. But new research at UC San Diego suggests a five-minute survey for parents could detect early signs of autism spectrum disorders in babies by the first birthday. The 25-question survey, which probes babies' verbal communication, emotional expression and gestures, has so far allowed researchers to diagnose autism spectrum disorders correctly 75 percent of the time. More

App-Specific Processors to Fight Dark Silicon
MIT Tech Review, April 28 -- A processor etched with circuits tailored to the most widely used apps on Android phones could help extend the devices' battery life. Researchers at UC San Diego have created software that scans the operating system and a collection of the most popular apps and then generates a processor design tailored to their demands. The result can be 11 times more efficient than today's typical general-purpose smart-phone chip, says Michael Taylor, who leads the GreenDroid project with colleague Steven Swanson. More

La Jolla Light, April 28 -- What’s a quilter to do when her family and friends have all the quilts they need?  In the case of Jeffree Itrich, a UC San Diego communications specialist with the Department of Neurosciences’ Alzheimer’s Disease Cooperative Study, you use the quilts for a good cause. Itrich, who lost her mother to severe dementia, set out to create a quilt donation program for the patients in the Alzheimer’s study in January 2010. More

UCSD Teams Up with Michael J. Fox to Fight Parkinson’s Disease
