Single Whale Swallow: Half a Million Calories
CBS News, Dec. 9 -- The filter-feeding strategy of blue whales, the largest animals on Earth, may explain their enormous size, according to a study that determined a single mouthful of food can contain 457,000 calories, or 240 times as much energy as they burn when grabbing that mouthful. A team of researchers led by Jeremy Goldbogen, who is now at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, calculated the efficiency of eating this way. More

Greg Lynn, Teddy Cruz Win $50,000 USA Awards
Architectural Record, Dec. 8 -- On Tuesday night, architects Greg Lynn and Teddy Cruz were named United States Artists Fellows for 2010, and they celebrated the no-strings-attached gifts of $50,000 at a reception at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center. Fifty other artists from the U.S. and Puerto Rico also received the fellowships, which have been distributed annually since 2005. Cruz is on the UC San Diego faculty. More
