Seniors Take on New Leadership Roles
San Diego Union-Tribune, Jan. 7 -- Talk is cheap, except at Patrick Henry High. Entering summer ball last May, the Patriots girls basketball team faced the difficult task of starting life without Emily Osga. Osga, now a point guard at UCSD, graduated from Patrick Henry in the spring after leading the team to back-to-back league championships. Coach Nick Bertaux walked over to Lindsay Thorstenson, Amy Viettry and Shelby Grimes — three soon-to-be seniors whom he had coached since they were freshmen — and gave them a talk. The tactic would set the tone for the season to come. More
Why You May Still be Writing '09
The Seattle Times, Jan. 6 -- OK, admit it. We're a week into the New Year, and you're still writing "2009" on your checks, school papers and office documents. If so, and especially if you're still having trouble making the switch two weeks from now, you may be suffering from "proactive interference." That's the term neuroscientists use to describe what happens when anything you've already learned interferes with something you're trying to learn. Larry Squire, a memory researcher at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at UCSD, said the problem isn't unique to switching your checks from 2009 to 2010. More
'Homeless' Art Student's Project
Provides Humbling Life Lesson
La Jolla Light, Jan. 6 -- Shanelle Sherlin, a sophomore at UCSD, now has a glimpse of what it's like to live life on the streets. The eye-opening experience helped her learn the power of giving to the homeless. The Muir College student spent 12 hours on the streets of downtown San Diego, recently, where she dug through trash cans, collected bottles, begged for money, and interviewed other homeless people for an art project designed to help others. "I came up with the idea to pretend to be homeless so that I could learn to relate to (the homeless) and humanize the indigent," she said. "Before I thought most homeless people were alcoholics or drug addicts, but I learned that wasn't the case for many of the people I met. One man I talked to lost everything after he was disabled from a car accident." More
