Local Teacher Finalist for National Award

, Jan. 13 -- A San Diego high school social studies teacher is one of four finalists in the running for National Teacher of the Year, officials said yesterday. Kelly Kovacic, 31, who teaches at The Preuss School, a charter campus at UCSD, will compete with educators from Florida, Iowa and Michigan for the national title, which will be announced in the spring. “I’m extremely honored to be a voice for teachers and public schools,” said Kovacic, who has been at the school for low-income students for eight years. More

Public Invited to UCSD Video Game Fest

, Jan. 12 -- Thousands will battle it out in what promises to be one of the largest video game tournaments in Southern California Jan. 16-17 at UCSD. The sixth annual Winter Game Fest will feature several new video games, such as Super Smash Bros. Melee, Madden 2010, Call of Duty 4 and more. More than 48 consoles, 72 TVs and 13 projectors running beginner-friendly Wii games and professional video game tournaments will be featured in the Price Center Ballrooms from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. More

UCSD Makes “100 Best Value” List
San Diego News Network, Jan. 12 -- UCSD was ranked among the nation’s “100 Best Value Colleges for 2010″ by The Princeton Review, it was announced Tuesday. The list recognizes 50 four-year public and 50 four-year private “best value” colleges and universities based on surveys of administrators and students at more than 650 institutions. Topping the list was the University of Virginia, followed by City University of New York - Hunter College, New College of Florida, Florida State University and the University of Colorado - Boulder. The selection criteria was based on academics, cost of attendance and financial aid. UCSD was also recently ranked 11th among the nation’s “100 Best Values in Public Colleges” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. More
