Calif. Whooping Cough: 9 Dead, Infections on Rise

New Biology Research to Run on Space Station
MSNBC, Sept. 16 -- The International Space Station is about to take one giant leap for biological science in orbit. Three new biomedical experiments funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health will take advantage of the space station's unique orbital facilities and weightless environment, NASA officials said. The experiments will use the station as a lab to study how bones and the immune system weaken in space. Researcher Declan McCole of UC San Diego plans to generate insights regarding the barrier properties of the intestines and explore how the absence of gravity affects a toxin's ability to diminish this barrier. More

Explorers Assess the Health of the World’s Oceans
NPR, Sept. 16 -- The world's ocean ecosystems are as diverse as forests and deserts on land. While resilient, these systems are under stress from pollution, overfishing and climate change -- and some experts say it may be too late to repair the damage. In a special broadcast with National Geographic, two premier explorers, including Enric Sala of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, explain the state of the world’s oceans and its habitats. UCSD Opens Wound Treatment Center in Encinitas
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 16 -- UC San Diego Health System’s Department of Emergency Medicine has opened a center in Encinitas for treatment of serious wounds and named Dr. Caesar Anderson as director, the university announced Wednesday. The Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Healing Center provides treatment for difficult-to-treat wounds resulting from surgery, radiation exposure, diabetes, bone infection, trauma or other causes. More

James Fowler’s Advice: Don’t Run With the Wrong Crowd
KPBS, Sept. 16 — You know the flu is contagious. But UC San Diego social scientist James Fowler would tell you that it is also socially contagious. His research into the flu is one of many studies he's done on how social networks lead to certain behaviors and, in this case, certain illnesses. His paper on the flu was published this week in the journal Plos One. More

New School Science Building Opens Monday
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 16 -- Two multimillion-dollar construction projects have been completed at Chula Vista Middle School. Construction costs for a nearly 11,000-square-foot science building and 3,500-square-foot cafeteria came to $12.6 million. Both were funded by the $644-million, Proposition O bond measure voters passed in 2006. The new science building is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including lab equipment and smartboards, which will prove useful in the school's partnership with UC San Diego’s Cyberbridge program. That program aims to increase college-level opportunities for high school students. More

Film Festival Focuses on Plight of Those Struggling to Survive
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 16 -- Organizers of a human rights film festival coming to San Diego beginning Saturday hope local audiences will be inspired by the stories of people struggling to make a difference against long odds in countries around the world. This year’s festival also has a local tie; two young filmmakers who live in San Diego, UC San Diego student Cody Marshall and Aaron Turner, worked on an 11-minute film called “I Want My Parents Back,” which tells the story of three American-born children whose parents were deported to Mexico. More
