Planned Distribution of BP Research Funds Worries Some Scientists
Los Angeles Times, Sept. 24 -- With its well finally shut down, BP is close to agreement on funneling a promised $500 million in research funds through an organization overseen by Gulf Coast governors, not the nation's scientific community. The pending decision has stirred concern among some scientists who fear most of the money will be doled out to institutions in the governors' home states — in effect making the distribution of research grants more like pork-barrel projects, rather than pure scientific pursuits. Her catcher was her husband, UCSD chemistry Professor James Whitesell. NBC San Diego, Sept. 23 -- Forbes Magazine is out with its new list of the 400 richest Americans and two San Diegans are included with the Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerbergs of the world. Investment adviser and San Diego State University alum Charles Brandes came in at 239 with income worth $1.5 billion. La Jolla resident Irwin Jacobs came in at 365 on the list. His wealth, $1.1 billion. The Qualcomm co-founder worked in the early 70s as a professor at UC San Diego. More
Charity Golf Tourney Saturday
San Diego Union-Tribune, Sept. 23 -- San Diego-based Miracle Babies will host its first charity golf tournament Saturday in hopes of continuing its mission to raise money for families caring for struggling newborns. The organization this year has aided more than 150 families whose newborns were in intensive care units at UC San Diego, Sharp Mary Birch and Rady Children’s hospitals. More

UCSD Doctor Given $10M Grant to Study Hypoxia Tolerance
Del Mar Times, Sept 23 -- A doctor at UC San Diego Medical Center received a $10 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for a study on hypoxia tolerance, it was announced Thursday. Dr. Gabriel Haddad, chair of the Department of Pediatrics at UCSD's School of Medicine and physician-in-chief at Rady Children's Hospital, was the recipient of the grant through the NIH's Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
