Arts and Culture Leaders Among Winners of MacArthur Prizes
The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Sept. 28 -- The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, in Chicago, has announced the 23 recipients of its 2010 MacArthur Fellowships. Commonly referred to as the "genius awards," the fellowships single out individuals from disparate disciplines who show creativity, originality, and the promise for continued innovative work. Carol Padden, 55, a professor of communication at UC San Diego, is one of the recipients. More

Parents' Drinking May Be Risk Factor for SIDS
Reuters, Sept. 28 -- Parents and caretakers who drink alcohol may put infants at a higher risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), new research suggests. Researchers at UC San Diego found that SIDS cases occur 33 percent more often on New Year's Day than any other day of the year, which is also when more people drink alcohol than at any other time of year.
