Renovated Lifeguard Tower Unveiled at Scripps Beach
San Diego Union Tribune, July 21 -- Surfers and swimmers at Scripps Beach in La Jolla can feel a little bit safer thanks to a $230,000 upgrade to the beach’s lifeguard tower. The tower, which lies just beneath UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography and was built in the 1960s, underwent a complete facelift paid for with funds from the university and several private companies. The school pitched in about half the cost, and community partners paid for the other half, Assistant Vice Chancellor Brian Gregory said. Scripps Beach is owned by the University of California Regents and since the beginning of June there have been 96 water rescues there. Before the renovation, lifeguards dealt with poor visibility, insufficient ventilation and little storage space for rescue gear. More
