UCSD Program to Focus on Southeastern San DiegoUnion Tribune, June 2 -- A UC San Diego pilot program that will offer classes to schoolchildren in southeastern San Diego officially kicked off Wednesday with an open house at the South Metro Career Center in the Mountain View neighborhood.
The program aims to provide schoolchildren with special skills and inspire them to potentially seek careers in science, technology, engineering, arts and mechanics.
The project is a combined effort of UC San Diego’s Center for Community Well-Being and the San Diego Workforce Partnership.

PC World, June 2 – UC San Diego researchers next week plan to demonstrate a solid state storage device that uses phase-change memory to blow away traditional hard drives and even newer flash drives. The Moneta system, which will be shown at the Design Automation Conference (DAC 2011) in San Diego, is thousands of times faster than a convention hard drive and up to seven times faster than flash memory drives according to the student-faculty research team. Swimming With Sensors
Chemistry World, June 2 -- Sensors printed onto the sleeves of wetsuits could alert the wearer to contaminated water. Navy divers could also use the sensors to locate underwater explosives, such as mines. Joseph Wang at UC San Diego and colleagues have demonstrated that their sensors can be printed directly onto neoprene, a synthetic rubber commonly used in wet- and dry-suits. More
La Jolla Patch, June 2 -- A large mural, two years in the making, was unveiled on UC San Diego’s campus on May 25. The Chicano Legacy 40 Años mural is 17 by 54 feet and made of thousands of colored glass pieces. It covers the east wall of Peterson Hall on the La Jolla campus.
