Hackers
Target Research Institutions
MSNBC, April 15-Hackers have broken
into some of the world's most powerful computer clusters in
recent weeks in an apparently coordinated cyber attack targeting
research and academic institutions. Although officials sought
Wednesday to downplay the seriousness of the threats, some security
experts warned that such a break-in could potentially enable
a serious attack on the Internet. Stanford University, the National
Center for Atmospheric Research, the San Diego Supercomputer
Center and the University of Illinois' National Center
for Supercomputing Applications were among the systems hit.

More Than 8 Hours Sleep
Too Much of a Good Thing
Reuters, April 15-Although the dangers
of too little sleep are widely known, new research new research
suggests that people who sleep too much may also suffer the
consequences. Specifically, investigators at the University
of California, San Diego found that people who clock
up 9 or 10 hours each weeknight appear to have more trouble
falling and staying asleep, as well as a host of other sleep
problems, than people who sleep 8 hours a night. These findings,
reported in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, demonstrate
that people who want to get a good night's rest may not need
to set aside more than 8 hours a night, study author Daniel
Kripke M.D. told Reuters Health.

Study: Multiple Test-Tube Births Declining
CNN News, April 15-Multiple births
linked to test-tube technology are declining nationally, largely
because doctors are implanting fewer embryos during each attempt
to make a woman pregnant, a study suggests. (Quote by Frank

Students
Protest Outreach Cutbacks
Oakland Tribune, April 15-Hundreds
of high school students from throughout the state, including
some from Alameda County, San Diego, Long Beach and Watsonville,
converged on the state capital today to protest proposed cuts
to university outreach programs. Protesters said Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger's proposal to eliminate $110 million in funding
for outreach programs run by University of California and California
State University would hurt students who rely on the programs
for information about college, as well as academic services
and assistance.

Scientists
Create New El Nino Crystal Ball
San Francisco Chronicle, April 15-Scientists
hope to forecast the arrival of El Ninos, the 800-pound gorillas
of the global climate, as much as two years in advance, thanks
to a new, improved computer model. Until now, forecasters considered
themselves lucky if they foresaw El Ninos -- which can turn
California into a lake or drought land, depending on the timing
-- a half-year in advance. (Quote by Arthur Miller,
a researcher at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.)

Ice Pack Could Change California's
Climate, Researchers Say
San Jose Mercury News, April 16-The
melting Arctic Ocean ice pack could shrink enough over the next
half century to change California's climate, reducing rain and
snowfall by nearly a third, researchers at the University of
California at Santa Cruz have found. (Quote by climate researcher
Dan Cayan of Scripps Institution of
Oceanography.)
