Itanium gets supercomputing
software
Business Week, Apr. 11 – Researchers
at the National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure
have built full Itanium support into software called NPACI Rocks
that can be used to assemble supercomputers out of clusters
of Linux computers. Itanium is Intel's high-end processor. The
software makes it easier to install the Linux operating system
on numerous computers despite differences between each machine.
The move will make it easier for Rocks users to add Itanium
systems into clusters that use the other chips, according to
Philip Papadopoulos, program director for the
San Diego Supercomputing Center's grid and
cluster computing group. The software is being used at a host
of academic and government sites, including the Scripps
Institution of Oceanography.

Reflective
polymer makes light work for doctors
The Engineer, Apr. 4 – Researchers
at the University of California have developed a biodegradable
polymer implant capable of reflecting light that will allow
doctors to monitor the healing of stitched wounds or the delivery
of drugs. Since porous silicon is not readily accepted by human
tissue because it is too rigid and can corrode, the team led
by University of California, San Diego professor
of chemistry Michael J. Sailor has created
a material that is flexible, biocompatible and robust but with
the same optical properties as silicon.
