Live or Die? Debating A Woman's Future
Newsday (New York), Apr. 14 – Since Terri Schiavo’s sudden collapse, doctors believe she has no cognitive ability. Her husband and guardian Michael, wants to remove the feeding tube that keeps her alive because he says it's what she would have wanted. In such cases, relatives who want to keep the patient alive "are not thinking so much about the patient, but themselves," said Dr. Larry Schneiderman, ethics consultant to the University of California, San Diego medical school.

Higher Ed to be hit hard by state cuts
San Diego Union-Tribune, Apr. 14 – There is enough pain in Gov. Gray Davis' proposed higher-education budget cuts to sting each of the 2.4 million students attending California's public colleges and universities. According to state budget analysts, the cuts will hurt community colleges more than the four-year campuses because fee increases – at least historically – have not scared off university students as much as community college students. The reason, state officials say, is university students pursue four-year degrees, while more community college students are enrolled in non-career programs. (Quotes John Woods, vice chancellor for resource management and planning of University of California, San Diego).
