Belt-Tightening
by the Bay
Chronicle of Higher Education, Apr.
4 – Fund raising at colleges in the Bay Area, where the
economy led the national boom, has been reeling since the downturn
in the economy. At colleges in the California State University
System, the percentage drops in giving are among the largest
in the region, but because the colleges are not dependent on
gifts and endowment spending for a significant proportion of
their operating budgets, the declines are hardly being noticed.
Nationwide, 21 institutions are now in the midst of capital
campaigns with goals of at least $1-billion, and five of them
-- including University of California, San Diego
-- are in this state.

The data Dr. Marc A. Schuckit, a professor

links within families of alcoholics. Schuckit
has dispelled several myths about the disease, as well as uncovered
evidence that shows how genes interact with a person’s
environment to heighten the risk of becoming an alcoholic.

Embracing
the Inner Diva
San Diego Union-Tribune, Apr. 3 –
Guillermo Reyes’ 1996 play, "Deporting the Divas,"
is just now getting its local debut at Diversionary Theatre,
where it opens Sunday night. According to some observers, it's
about time that "Divas" came home. "It belongs
here," said the University of California, San Diego-based
Chicano theater scholar Jorge Huerta, who directed
the play's 1996 premiere in Los Angeles and helped shape it,
through a subsequent San Francisco production, into its present
form.
