Is Chosen to Lead La Jolla Ensemble
San Diego Union-Tribune, April 10 – Internationally acclaimed percussionist and UCSD faculty member Steven Schick has been appointed music director of the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, San Diego's largest and oldest community orchestra and chorus. Schick's appointment is the culmination of a nearly two-year search for a successor to Harvey Sollberger, who retired. More

New Review Shows Many Young
Californians Quit Smoking Tobacco
KPBS, April 10 -- A new review of California's Tobacco Control Program finds young adults in the state are kicking the habit in record numbers. The UCSD study examines smoking cessation rates in the decade before the program started in 1989, and compares them with what happened during the 90’s. The study finds after the Tobacco Control Program began, smokers ages 20 to 34 increased their rate of quitting by 50 percent. More
Mercer, Jones Begin New Era
The Macon Telegraph, April 10 -- The Mercer women's basketball team has had a cloud hanging over it since August. On Monday, the clouds went away when Mercer announced that Janell Jones would be the next women's head coach in a news conference. Jones was selected from more than 100 applicants. Jones, who takes over the position immediately, has spent the past two seasons coaching at UCSD. More
La Jolla Playhouse Gets New Artistic Director
San Diego Union-Tribune, April 10 -- A versatile New York-based stage director, Christopher Ashley, will become the artistic director of La Jolla Playhouse this fall, Playhouse board chairman Ralph Bryan will announce today. Ashley, 42, will succeed two-time Tony winner Des McAnuff who revived the Playhouse in 1983. With the completion of a $46 million capital and construction campaign, the Playhouse now has three mainstage theaters on the UCSD campus. More
