Mother's Milk a Lifesaver for Preemies?
CBS News, April 10 -- Kathie Robinson is part of a new program at UCSD Medical Center that encourages mothers of premature babies, even babies who can't swallow, to commit to breastfeeding rather than formula. It's not easy. Only 45 percent of preemies go home on breast milk as compared to 74 percent of full-term babies. Doctors here believe that for babies born weighing only a few ounces, human milk means the difference between life and death. More
Report: Diabetics Skimp
on Lifesaving Care in Recession
CBS News, April 13 -- Diabetics are increasingly risking life and limb by cutting back on — or even going without — doctor visits, insulin, medicines and blood-sugar testing as they lose income and health insurance in the recession, an Associated Press analysis has found. Man Rescued From Submerged Van Dies
San Diego Union-Tribune, April 10 -- A Vista man who was rescued from a submerged minivan off Harbor Island on Monday night has died, the Medical Examiner's Office said Friday. Robert Johnson, 62, a passenger in the Dodge Caravan, died at UCSD Medical Center late Thursday night. Johnson’s family thanked the UCSD Medical Center for trying to save his life. More

Dead Whale Towed to Sea Back on Beach
San Diego Union-Tribune, April 12 -- A whale carcass that washed ashore in Del Mar and was towed to sea Friday has found its way back to the beach. The 28-foot-long gray whale was discovered before dawn yesterday on Torrey Pines State Beach near Flat Rock, said state lifeguard Lt. Ed Vodrazka. It is in a fairly remote area, he said. Biologists from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography are being asked if they want to study the animal in the meantime. More

The group of 13 students, led by Jennifer Lai, provided blood pressure and diabetes screenings, answered any health-related questions the attendees may have had and provided health education and referral information.
