Vigils for Virginia Tech
San Diego Union-Tribune, April 19 -- Two days after a gunman killed students and faculty members at Virginia Tech, local residents gathered yesterday to remember the victims and come to terms with with the tragedy. Last night, at the Price Center, the UCSD Center for Ethics and Spirituality and the Episcopal and Methodist Campus Ministries organized a candlelight vigil for the Virginia Tech students. Tomorrow, UCSD's Warren College will hold a forum for students, staff and faculty members to discuss the shootings. More
Vote-by-mail Doesn't Deliver Voters
San Diego Union-Tribune, Opinion, April 19 -- It is possible that mandatory voting by mail could fall short of the ideal. It might replace the sanctuary of a polling place with the chaos of a living room on a busy evening, where screaming kids, a howling dog, the TV and household chores all compete for attention with your ballot. Replacing a single Election Day with an Election Month may cause you to lose focus and leave your ballot buried in a stack of glossy attack ads, just like that pile of laundry that needs folding.
