Elects Three UCSD Professors
San Diego Daily Transcript, April 25 -- The National Academy of Sciences elected three UCSD professors in chemistry, medicine and physics Tuesday to membership in the prestigious academy, one of the highest honors bestowed on U.S. scientists and engineers. Mark H. Thiemens, dean of the Division of Physical Sciences; Don W. Cleveland, a professor of medicine, neuroscience and cellular and molecular medicine at UCSD's School of Medicine; and Jose Onuchic, co-director of the Center for Theoretical Biological Physics, were among the 72 new members and 18 foreign associates elected to the academy Tuesday "in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research." San Diego Union-Tribune, April 26 -- When conservation biologist Tom Scott started investigating the plight of the San Clemente loggerhead shrike in the late 1970s, he spent his days hiking and his nights camping on the rocky outcropping in the Pacific Ocean. What he discovered as a doctoral student was startling: The sharp-beaked shrikes were so close to extinction they eventually would be billed as North America's most endangered bird. Doctors’ Pay Is a Focus of UCI Inquiry
Los Angeles Times, April 26 -- Federal investigators have subpoenaed records relating to five UCI Medical Center doctors involved with the Orange hospital's failed liver transplant program, including their compensation agreements, according to a source familiar with the case. The subpoena was issued as part of an unfolding criminal investigation by the FBI and the Department of Health and Human Services that is focusing, at least in part, on whether there was fraudulent billing of government healthcare programs, including Medicare and Medi-Cal.
