UCSD names acting chancellor
San Diego Union Tribune, Aug. 1-Marsha A. Chandler was nominated Friday to be the interim chancellor of University of California, San Diego, where she is the second-ranked executive officer. Chandler would replace Robert C. Dynes, who is leaving to become the president of the University of California system, and would remain in the position until a permanent successor is hired.

Pain relief without pills; A topical cream containing an ibuprofen-like ingredient may avoid problems associated with oral medication.
Los Angeles Times, Aug. 4- Trans-Pharma Pharmaceutical Co. is developing a topical cream containing ketoprofen, a chemical cousin of ibuprofen (Advil), that has been found to decrease the common muscle soreness that peaks a day or two after exercise, without stomach discomfort. Researchers from UC San Diego assisted in testing the company's patented cream in on 32 men, ages 18 to 35.

Bewitched in Salem
San Diego Union-Tribune, Aug. 1- Moshe Safdie has been designing public buildings for more than 35 years, buildings that balance grand gesture with lyrical elements of human scale. Safdie's first major project in San Diego, UCSD's Eleanor Roosevelt College, is expected to open in September.

Mexican officials see hope in bill proposed to grant legal status

Border Patrol's arrest of family outside consulate is challenged

Opening night a pip(a) for society's 18th season
