Designer plants could clean
hazardous waste

chemical can permit plants to detoxify heavy metals and transport
them from the roots to stems and leaves, a finding that brings
the possibility of using plants to clean up soil contaminated
with toxic metals such as lead, arsenic and cadmium one step

Seaweeds use chemical warfare
to fight microbes
Chemistry, Aug. 8- Researchers from
the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at
the University of California, San Diego, have
discovered that seaweeds defend themselves from specific pathogens
with naturally occurring antibiotics. This finding helps explain
why some seaweeds, sponges and corals appear to avoid most infections
by fungi and bacteria.
