Why we
need more Latino scientists and engineers
San Diego Union-Tribune, Opinion,
Aug. 13-Eduardo Macagno, the founding dean
of UCSD's Division of Biological sciences,
is voicing his opinion that California must do a better job
at removing barriers for the rapidly growing Latino population
who are trying to enter the science and technology industry.
To help remedy the problem, he has started a program where students

biology.

researchers say they've figured out how certain plants soak
up toxic waste from the soil into their shoots and leaves. The
finding may help cut cleanup costs at the nation's hazardous
