Tomorrow's Doping Scandal? It Could Be Genetic Enhancement
USA Today, Aug. 13—Tainted by suspicions of drug use, this summer's Athens Games may nevertheless mark one of the last Olympics before another inglorious milestone — genetic enhancement in sports. Recent developments may soon make it possible to genetically stimulate muscle growth in the limbs of athletes who want to jump higher, throw farther or punch harder than ever before. As the technology progresses, it also may become possible to boost oxygen uptake, cardiac output and metabolic efficiency. (Quote by Theodore Friedmann, a pediatrician at the University of California, San Diego.)

New Treatment Advance for Spine Surgery At UCSD
San Diego Channel 10, Aug. 12—Floyd Ross, 86, made it his mission to escape his agonizing back pain. He had a slip of the spine where the bone slipped one over the other. Doctors said traditional back surgery was not possible because of his advancing age, but Ross found relief with a new procedure conducted by UC San Diego, called extreme lateral interbody infusion. Unlike traditional back surgery, the XLIF surgery accesses the spine through the patient's side -- avoiding major muscles and tissue in the back. Ethical Issue Impedes Stem-Cell Debate
San Jose Mercury News, Opinion, Aug. 13—As they spar over stem-cell research, both President Bush and Sen. John Kerry say they want to develop the technique so it can cure such afflictions as Alzheimer's disease and paralysis. But each candidate is oversimplifying the issue and avoiding a hard truth: If stem-cell research is to deliver on its enormous promise, the government must cross an ethical line and fund the creation and destruction of human embryos. (Quote by Larry Goldstein M.D., professor of cellular and molecular medicine at the University of California, San Diego and a leader in the American Society for Cell Biology.)

City's Bond Rating Gets Another Downgrade
San Diego Union-Tribune, Aug. 12—A third major Wall Street firm downgraded San Diego's bond rating yesterday, and warned that it might do so again. Moody's Investors Service said "confidence in the city's financial management has eroded" for reasons including the city's $1.15 billion pension deficit, its low reserves, rising debt and failure to complete a fiscal 2003 audit.
